I do many researches and tests on the PSBBN. I can't tell you how many time it will take. My tests are oriented to many things, including and not limited to the English translation, access to channel backups, correction of broken links, update server and update denial, download of online contents, boot sequence...
The last thing I've tested on the PSBBN is the NetFront web browser in its native English.

Sorry for the shit quality of my pics. There is one major problem, when NetFront is run in English, the virtual keyboard doesn't come up.

To summarize, I do work very actively on the PSBBN, and it's a long long long project.


This is how I prepare my PS2 HDD for Ubuntu :

After Step 2, PSBBN partitions are mountable with Ubuntu. Step 3 restores the APA table (backed up at Step 1), and it's to perform when you want to put your HDD back in your PS2.

Using TestDisk and WinHIIP is very risky. Make sure you always select your PS2 HDD, don't crash your PC HDDs.

You must log on Ubuntu as "root".
To do it, I start Ubuntu in "recovery mode" then I type the following command in the terminal :
If Ubuntu does not mount PSBBN automatically, use a mount point manager like "Storage Device Manager"
I'm not a Ubuntu specialist so I can't help much on partition mounting.

1:когда будешь делать дамп можешь сделать так что бы сначала грузилось HDD OSD а уже из него PSBBN?(а лучше 2 дама один что бы сначала HDD OSD запускалось 2й что бы сначала PSBBN)
2:я слышал что PSBBN не поодерживает мультитапы,не отображает больше 2х карт памяти в меню,можно это исправить?
3:я заметил что клиент почты при загрузке некоторых писем намертво вешает PS2,это можно исправить? =)
4: в меню PSBBN я нигде не нашел где посмотреть обьем HDD,помоему так такого даже не предусмотренно,так вот у меня предложение,может информацию о свободном занятом месте на HDD поместить как на PS3 в информацию о системе?(там где отображается версия PS1 драйвера DVD-плеера и т.д)
5:и еще хотелось бы web-браузер вывести в главное меню если это возможно =)

1) Do you mean you want a dump that starts the HDDOSD first, with the PSBBN selectable from the HDD browser like an app ? I think it's possible. The condition is to keep the PSBBN MBR in place. The PSBBN MBR is responsible of discs/apps boot. If it is replaced by the HDDOSD MBR, the PSBBN could no longer run apps and discs. So the PSBBN MBR must be present, and it must load the HDDOSD KELF (hosdsys) instead of the PSBBN kernel launcher (osdboot). I will try to do my next dumps like that.

2) Thanks for the info. Well, I don't think I can fix this. Yesterday, I tried to add an item to the MC browser, the Virtual Memory Card. It didn't work. The text is displayed but when I select it, it jumps to an existing submenu (MC1 or MC2). So I guess this section of the PSBBN must be recoded with Sony SDK in order to add the multitap support to the MC browser module.

3) This may be caused by a faultive charset... Loading the mail client in UTF-8 will probably fix it... I will see what I can do. Thanks for the info.

4) Like for the multitap, I think it's not possible without recoding the module.

5) Yes=), I was about to add a shortcut to NetFront in the main menu. But before, I have to do deeper researches on NetFront and optimize it. At the moment, I've been able to restore the virtual keyboard, with the English interface, but I'm still facing bugs. Window borders are not shown, it does nothing when you press a key of the virtual keyboard...

Супер - спасибо за столь подробный мануал. Сразу скажу удалось немного упростить решение. У меня стоит на компе виртуальная машина Download Ubuntu Virtual Machine + enviroment to compile OPL из этой темы. Достаточно поставить testdisk в synaptics и подключить хард через usb переходник (если таковой есть разумеется). Через терминал всё прекрасно работает без перезагрузки.

У меня тоже парочка вопросов =)

1) Bishi Bashi Special 3 - ты писал, что были наработки по этой теме - было бы интересно увидеть. Если наконец-то появился полноценный эмулятор первой сони это же будет невероятно круто!!! Хотелось бы самому устанавливать игры от ПС1 в список программ, какой-нибудь хотя бы минимальный туториал по этой теме не помешал бы.
2) Как всё-таки можно смотреть фильмы через Movie Channel? Понятно, что по мануалу MovieDownloader for PS-BBN, но у него как всегда всё очень лаконично и малопонятно. В идеале хотелось бы какой-нибудь уже настроенный мини-сервер (урезанный по возможности), чтобы все действия сводились к перетаскиванию файла в папку.
3) Также можно ли просто скопировать pss файл на жёсткий, чтобы ББ Навигатор смог его увидеть? Есть подозрение, что это происходит в разделе __common поскольку, там создаются папки, но полной уверенности у меня нет.

There is a PS2 port of ePSXe called "PS2PSXe". I never tried it.

I stopped my investigations on the Bishi Bashi Emulator at the very first stage, because I moved to another PS2 project. At this stage, emulation of homebrews with the BBS3 emulator consists of a very dirty hack :
A homebrew executable is injected onto the emultated PS1 BIOS (the homebrew replaces the PlayStation OSD). When the BBS3 emulator emulates the PS1 BIOS, it executes the homebrew code instead of the PlayStation OSD::dirol::. So for now, there is no CD-ROM emulation, the hacked emulator can only run PS-X EXEs, executable size is hyper restricted (because it must fit into the PS1 OSD room), disc image of Bishi Bashi 3 must be present (if not, the virtual CD drive can't be mounted and the emulator crashes).
If we could gain control of the virtual CD drive and use it to run retail ISOs:Blush:...



I didn't try Richi's MovieDownloader but I experienced 2 movie downloads from a Hudson Channel backup (stored in my server).

Maybe we could write our own Movie Downloader or learn more about movie downloading after analyzing Hudson Channel scripts...

If I remember correctly, movies are stored into the __common partition, and referenced by a SQL database located in __contents/contents/database/movie.db. Movies can be copied directly to the HDD, but the database must be updated in convenience.

Я нашёл простой способ как получить NetFront на английском. Достаточно зайти в папку \home\bn\.netfrontrc\lib\locale\ja\LC_MESSAGES\ и переименовать файлы netfront_sce_eng.mo и netfront_sce_eng.po в netfront_sce_jp.mo (netfront_sce_jp.po)

совершенно верно.Я бы хотел 2 дампа,один именно тот что вы описали(сначало HDD OSD оттуда запуск PSBBN) а второй с обычной загрузкой PSBBN,пусть у людей будет выбор какой способ запуска им удобней =)
PS:лично я буду пользоваться дампом где запуск HDD OSD будет первым,но кому то может удобней что бы сразу запускался PSBBN так что пускай будут оба варианта дампа::dirol::

That's actually the trick I use, but from script files (I don't remember which scripts). Scripts have variable for "Western" and "NTSC" profiles. "Western" profile uses the netfront_sce_eng resource and also applies GUI corrections, for texts to be displayed properly.
The advantage of modifying scripts is the customisation of the default profile. For example, you can set the position of buttons, set your homepage, block unwanted connections...


By the way, there is another SQL database for movies indexation. In the __linux.7 partition, database/sqlite/movie.db.

Do not expect something stable and good looking, it has not been originaly made to be released.
I'm just sharing it for those who want to see some evolution on this topic.

Итак я протестил очередной дамп и излагаю свои замечания и пожелания.
Замеченные ошибки и недоделки:
1:запуск HDD OSD все отлично все работает(в будущем хотелось бы все дампы что бы HDD OSD стартовало первым)
2:запуск приложений из HDD OSD работает как при включенном чипе так и выключенном,зависаний нет при запуске из PSBBN с включенным чипом все приложения виснут,с отключенным чипом работает
3:при запуске bishi bashi special 3 происходит перезапуск PS2,происходит как с включеным чипом так и без, как при запуске из PSBBN так и при запуске из HDD OSD
4:при запуске PSBBN из HDD OSD он принудительно выставляет соотношение сторон экрана 4:3 из за чего при следующем включении PS2 HDD OSD также стартует в 4:3 режиме приходится каждый раз выставлять обратно нужное соотношение сторон в настройках
5:в меню PSBBN заметил при входе в каналы movie channel music channel photo chanel переведены не все подпункты меню
6: в game channels в канале hudson channel в в пункте download выдает ошибку 404(в hudson channel 2004 2005 2006 все нормально)
7:в некоторых PS1 играх не работает пункт выход из меню паузы
8:из 5ти запущенных PS1 игр изображение через компонент есть только в 3х


Пожелания:
1:в настройках выбора экрана в PSBBN нельзя выбрать соотношение сторон экрана никакое другое кроме 4:3,хотелось что бы можно было выбирать как в HDD OSD между Full 4:3 и 16:9
2:опять же настройки экрана в PSBBN,помимо выбора источника сигнала RGB и Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr хотелось бы выбор разрешения, хотя бы между 480p/i а в идеале 480i/p 720i/p 1080i(насколько я знаю максимально поддерживаемое PS2 разрешение)
3:в ранних версиях PSBBN я наблюдал в настройках пункт настройки гарнитуры,хотелось бы его вернуть
3:также хотелось бы увидеть в настройках службу feega,она ведь была там раньше
4:Хотелось бы также что бы в настройках PSBBN в пункте System Info в самом низу отображалось занятое/свободное место на HDD(как на PS3)
5:Хотелось бы также иметь возможность добавлять новое содержимое на каналы,или еще лучше FAQ как создать свой канал(можно было бы сделать много полезных каналов)
6:Было бы неплохо если бы Netfront 3.0 был добавлен в главное меню PSBBN(кстати вы говорили что он не работает так как вы удалили swap-раздел для него,хотел поинтересоваться для чего это было нужно?)
7:хотелось бы кнопкой подтвержения в меню PSBBN сделать Х как в HDD OSD а отмена соотвественно кнопка О
8:если такое возможно надо бы сделать такой канал через который можно было бы закачивать с пк в PSBBN аудио/видео/фото файлы

1:каналы находятся на резервных серверах,у вас на пк или на HDD PS2?
2:Сервер обновления PSBBN остался прежним или вы заменили его на свой?

4:будет ли какое нибуть приложение для автоматизированой установки приложений и игр с PS2?или еще лучше самодельный канал откуда весь нужный софт можно будет скачать?

У меня тоже пара вопросов.
1) Каким образом вы делаете Кельфы? Есть какая то программа для инъекций? Или приходится через FMCB и карту памяти?
2) ОПЛ взят тот который miniopl от oliveira?
3) По каким-то непонятым причинам после выхода из NetFront выход изображения сбивается на NTSC. (Не в этой сборке разумеется).


Мои предложения:
1) При перегонке дисков в убунту НЕ требуется менять МБР достаточно просканировать диск процентов на 25 - пока не появится таблица разделов.
2) Почтовый клиент , который используется в ПС2. Вот небольшой фак к нему. Версия на ПС2 sylpheed 0.8.24. Там по идее даже руссский можно добавить ))

In the last dump I've posted, Hudson Channel backups are hosted by my server. Sony channels are hosted by Sony's server. No channel is stored in the HDD.
Loading a channel from the HDD would be an interesting feature. For example, if a developer builds his own LAN filesharing system...


I don't remember how the last dump is made. I think the updater scripts are still intact and check for update/upgrades from DNAS servers. Updates have already been performed (this is not a "first initialization" dump), so it explains why the startup is faster (it just checks the version) and the modified top.xml is not overwritten.

The update/upgrade is still obscure. I know how upgrades are performed (tarballs are downloaded from the DNAS server then installed), but I don't know how and from where updates are performed.

First, I would like to disable both updates and upgrades, because upgrades kill the PSBBN installation (it replaces my atad/regionless hacked KELFs with original JAP KELFs), and updates are incompatible with earlier versions of the PSBBN (latest PSXML scripts ruin the navigation of v0.20).
Then, if I succeed to disable upgrades and updates, I'll try to redirect it to my server, in order to allow updates with homemade updates...


As far as I know, the original download+install process involves crypted .PAK files and... DNAS. Forget about the official thing. I did reverse the purification system a few years ago. If I remember correctly, signed files are RSA decrypted with the iLinkID and the HDD Serial Nbr as initializing vector. The HDD serial number is stored into a firmware module. In other terms : will not work with unofficial HDDs, could not be copied on-the-fly...

I think that l_oliveira and sp193 are working on a totally legal and free application installer for the HDDOSD...

No. The OPL version contained in my last dump is an old OPL that I've downloaded about one year ago. If my memories are correct, I did some modification of it's environement.
In this installation, the OPL executable is a standard ELF, and it is LoadExecuted by a small launcher. If you replace my OPL ELF with the most recent version, the launcher will probably LoadExecute the most recent version.

I don't follow the miniOPL project, but if I understood correctly, it is a work-in-progress project. So, by respect for their work I will not merge it with my piracy related SCE binhacks. I doubt they will appreciate to see their hard work being mutilated and packed with warez things.

The TV mode is definied by the PSBBN Kernel loader (osdboot.elf). It loads vmlinux with Linux-styled arguments. When you boot PSBBN in a PAL console, osdboot.elf calls GetOsdConfig and runs vmlinux in PAL 60 Hz. Maybe the NetFront binary forget some arguments when exiting to the PSBBN, causing the PSBBN to reload with his default video mode settings...

If someone wants to play around with args, you can load the PSBBN kernel with Playstation 2 Linux kernelloader.

Well I'm affraid I can't answer all your questions objectively right now.
PSBBN and Linux are totally new to me.
It's not like modifying a regular PS2 binary.
I didn't tweak Linux based software until now and I'm learning things each time I modify stuff.
Also, dumping drives, compressing dumps, testing take a lot of time for a small step ahead.
I will really appreciate if other people join the project and help us with their knowledge.
For now I'm stuck making the HDDOSD based dumps.
I can't do anymore test until it's finished.
Suggestions are welcome, but I can't take care of them immediately.

На скорую руку состряпал пакет портативных программ для windows, чтобы просматривать файлы на HDD. Содержание пакета:
0) HDD raw copy
1) Testdisk win version
2) WinHiip
3) BootIce
4) UFSexplorer
Порядок действий:
1) Записываем через hdd raw copy образ
2) Запускаме winhiip и сохранем разделы диска.
3) Запускаем TestDisk и по инструкции на видео ищем разделы линукса. Весь диск сканировать не надо, достаточно подождать пока не появится на экране таблица (где то в районе 30 процентов). Затем записываем таблицу разделов и на этом останавливаемся. То что дальше описано в видео делать не надо.
4) Запускаем Bootice. В разделе destination disk выбираем наш hdd. Жмём Parts Manage -> Backup Partition Table.
5) Теперь получаем доступ к разделам линукса. Гораздо удобнее и проще использовать vmware. Но если охота просто просмотреть файлы не изменяя их, то достаточно запустить UFS-Explorer. Который позволяет просматривать файлы.
6) Чтобы сделать HDD читаемым для приставки опять запускаем winhiip и жмём restore.


Теперь когда мы всё это проделали, можно второй пункт пропускать (он довольно длинный - лично у меня около 15 минут), а вместо него делать Bootice->Parts Manage -> Restore Partition Table. Дело одной секунды. Огромная экономия времени. К тому же таблица разделов редко меняется и вполне может подходить к нескольким дампам.




Немного поковырял Netfront. Удалось достичь этого.

Достаточно раскомментировать там вс, что только можно и добавитьСам нетфронт никак не получается сделать истинно английским. То есть чтобы нормально показывал file menu, а не эти кривые штуки (menu:menu0). Попробую ещё поковырять на досуге.

Также можно поковырять default_bwdesignNTSC.prf. И точно также всё раскомментировать - правда там тоже есть много чего неработающего, о зато браузер становится более интересным...

Также можно в каналы добавить раз уж сделали такие красивые иконки, то надо их использовать.
