20-th Century Video Almanac (U)

Для 3DO было выпущено много странного программного обеспечения, не совсем вписывающегося в концепцию игровой приставки. Невольно начинаешь понимать, насколько светлое будущее пророчили системе. В этом альманахе тебе не придётся спасать мир от нашествия пришельцев, или разгадывать головоломки. В интерактивной энциклопедии 20-го века, собранной на этом диске находится информация, включающая текст и фотографии о политиках, войнах, катастрофах, спорте, технологиях и других ключевых датах за последние 100 лет, а точнее, с 1890 по 1990 года.

Моё мнение - поленились создатели. Оболочка сделана на совесть, интуитивно понятной, но могли ведь информации побольше втиснуть, включая и видео вставки, а ограничились обзорными статьями.
Интересно, если открыть карту и щёлкнуть по "Азии", в меню появится как Россия (информация до 30-х годов), так и Советский Союз. О современной России и Союзных республиках ни слова. (Источник)
При просмотре дат в "On this day" эмулятор FreeDO вылетает, жалуясь на неполадки со звуком.

"Educational Only"

Some of the strangest media that you can find on the 3DO has to do with the various interactive software that came with the system, or could be bought at a later date. In this particular outing, you’re not looking at blasting aliens, or trying to solve puzzles, but rather shifting through a rather large database of the most influential portions of the 20th Century. More of a learning tool than anything else, you’ll find that this title has plenty of things to offer if you’re looking to see just what you’ve missed in the last 100 years!

The interaction that you have with this title is pretty limited in which you can select from several different portions of the data base and watch just what happened at certain points in time. It’s hard to really give a review on something that isn’t necessarily a video game, and you might find that if you can pick up this title for the 3DO, you might be in for an informational treat. There are some interesting quiz answers that you’ll find throughout the exploration of the disc, though you might find that it is nothing that you haven’t seen or heard in a basic history class.

Browsing through the disc really isn’t all that hard, in which you use the 3DO control to select the different subjects and then select from a smaller menu. Though this might seem like it is a little hard to get used to, there really isn’t much to it and if you’re a computer using person {which you must be to be reading this}, then you’ll find the point and click interface to be easy to learn. There isn’t much else to the control, though the movement between the different subjects can be a little time consuming and slow considering that the disc has to stop and then redirect your request and start in another area.

The further you get into the disc, the more you can access. You’ll be able to take a look at clips of different points in time that have been filmed, though most of what you’re seeing is a low quality full motion video. If you were to compare the visuals that you find here with something akin to the Sega CD games in the early days, then you’ll know exactly what to expect from the presentation. Most of the videos that you see do have some clarity to them, but you might find that it can be a little hard to see just what is going on with your selection if you don’t have a television large enough!

Audio portions of the disc include some commentary on what happened in your selection of history. From war to disasters, you’ll be able to hear a little excerpt of dialogue in the different portions, but you might find that there just isn’t enough to keep you moving through the different sections. There is plenty of text to read though, although you might grow a little weary of reading up on past events after the first hour or so. Technically, you could call this pure learning software that attempts to capture the interest of whomever has the disc with plenty of movie clips and some quick dialogue, but it doesn’t change the fact that it is merely a piece of educational software.

Video Almanac is simply a piece of software that is meant to educate the mind while on a video game system. While I commend the thought and even the presentation of the disc, there really isn’t any reason to pick this up at a high price, as you can find the same information simply browsing the web. With the amount of history here, the only reason to collect this disc is to simply have the disc on hand to say that you have every piece of the 3DO software made. Aside from that, stick to the history books and get back to the real reason you bought the 3DO: Video Gaming!
